Stone & Webster will lead a consortia building a $109 million geothermal power plant for Amoseas Indonesia, Inc. The project calls for a second and third unit at the Darajat geothermal station, which taps into geothermal fields in the Garut Regency of West Java, Indonesia. Each unit has a capacity of 70 MW. The entire project was set to be finished by early 2000. Stone & Webster's portion of the contract is worth about $40 million.
Westinghouse Electric Corp. contracted to supply a barge-mounted power plant for the Port of Mombassa Power Barge Project in Malaysia. The 48 AMW simple cycle floating plant will be powered by an oil-fired combustion turbine generator. Westinghouse also will supply engineering support. The plant was set to begin operation this month. It marks the fourth mounted power plant Westinghouse has received from Westmont Offshire Sdn Bhd. or its affiliates.
Minnesota Iron & Steel and the United Power Association has agreed to an electric power/business partnership to build a $650-million taconite plant near Nashwauk, Minn. The proposed 10-year agreement calls for the UPA, a generation and transmission cooperative, to invest in the project and to guarantee the lowest electricity prices for its duration.
CellNet Data Systems Inc. and Metretek Inc. have aligned to offer wireless and telephone-based services to the gas utility industry. The alliance will offer a range of low-cost meter reading and data collection products.
Williams Energy Services' Power Services unit has begun operating its 24-hour power trading center. The unit will manage physical power deals and buy and sell energy in real time.
Solarex joined with the Utility PhotoVoltaic Group, the U.S. Department of Energy and others to reduce the up-front cost of residential solar electric systems. The program is expected to create a higher demand for solar electricity, making solar units commercially competitive in three years. The venture's total cost is $3.62 million. Per-watt installed costs will be reduced from $6 to $4, nearing the commercial "break through" price of $3 per watt.
CNE Energy Services Group Inc. formed a marketing alliance with Kasden Energy Services L.L.C. The companies will market natural gas and petroleum products to commercial, industrial and municipal customers throughout the Northeast. It is the second such alliance formed by CNE and a local oil company; the first was with Standard Oil of Connecticut.
