New Hires:

The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) promoted Dave Nevius to senior vice president; David Cook to vice president and general counsel; and Don Benjamin to vice president. Nevius has been a vice president at NERC since 1986; Cook has been NERC's general counsel since 1999; and Benjamin has been director of operations since 1985.

Ameren Corp. named Martin J. Lyons vice president. Lyons has been the company's controller since joining Ameren in October 2001.

William M. Nugent, immediate past president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), was named chairman of NARUC's National Council on Competition and the Electricity Industry, tasked with ensuring that competitive electricity markets operate fairly.

The National Academy of Engineering, citing "leadership in the development of national and international programs for strengthening nuclear safety and safeguards," elected Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Richard A. Meserve to academy membership.

El Paso Corp. has shifted responsibilities, in light of the liquidation of its trading portfolio. Robert W. Baker, formerly senior vice president and deputy general, replaces Clark C. Smith as the company's president of Global Power. Smith will oversee El Paso's exit from trading activities.

The Ocean Energy Inc. board of directors elected Cathy L. Tompkins vice president of information technology. Tompkins has been with Ocean Energy the past eight years.

W. Steven Wolff was elected president of DPL Inc., putting him in charge of 4,600 MW of generation in Ohio and Indiana.

Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) Vice President Phyllis Rich will head the newly formed Corporate Services Division of NEI, an integration of the institute's Finance and Administration Division and Information Resources Division.

Entergy Nuclear promoted Thomas E. Trepanier to general manager of plant operations at River Bend Station, replacing Dwight C. Mims, who now manages the Arkansas Nuclear One steam generator replacement project. Trepanier's previous nuclear experience includes three managerial positions at Pilgrim Station in Plymouth, Mass.

As the new senior research advisor at EPRIsolutions subsidiary Primen, Lynn Fryer will launch a new market research study involving utility/customer communication. Fryer previously headed up the E Source Energy Information and Communications Service at Platts.

Georgia Public Service Commission member H. Doug Everett was named to NARUC's Committee on Electricity. Everett was elected to his first term on the commission last November.

Awards:

The University of Washington, Tacoma bestowed its 2002 Business Leader of the Year award upon Mark Crisson, director of utilities for the city of Tacoma. Tacoma Public Utilities says Crisson helped steer Tacoma through the Western power crisis without taking on significant long-term debt.

Honors:

Commodities Magazine named Progress Energy's Brenda Castonguay, senior vice president for administrative services, one of the "50 Key Women in Energy." The magazine recognized Castonguay's role in forming a human resources plan for Progress Energy. Castonguay joined Progress in 1994.

Deceased:

Lawrence R. McDonnell, formerly vice president of public relations for Pacific Gas and Electric Co., died Feb. 14, at age 87. He retired from the company in 1980.
