Tenneco Energy and Chinese Petroleum Corp.'s new alliance plans to work on natural gas transmission facilities, power plants, and other energy ventures in Taiwan and North America. Their first project is a
600-Mw natural gas-fired power plant near Taipei, expected to go on line in June 1998. CPC is one of Asia's largest state-owned energy companies; Tenneco Energy, of Houston, transports or markets about 16 percent of the natural gas used in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Energy has made its first incentive payments to renewable energy generation plants, totaling $693,120. The payments, made under the Renewable Energy Production Incentive Program, cover fiscal 1994. State or local government-owned facilities or nonprofit co-ops generating electricity using solar, wind, biomass, or some types of geothermal resources can participate. Recipients included the Sacramento (CA) Municipal Utilities District (three facilities: wind, solar, solar); City of Glendale, CA (landfill methane); Lycoming County, PA (landfill methane); Emerald Peoples' Utility District, OR (landfill methane); and University of California at Los Angeles, CA (landfill methane).
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Automatic Meter Reading Association have approved the first standard for automatic meter reading. The standard describes what a telephone network should do to support improved automatic meter-reading services. It will also specify for manufacturers what utilities need when it comes to meter-reading specifications.
American Superconductor Corp. demonstrated a commercial-size prototype of a cryogenically cooled power converter, reinforcing the company's plans to launch a product line by mid-1997. The test showed the unit could reach 100 Kw. Power converters convert and control electric power in motor drives, power-quality equipment, and other applications.
California Energy Co.'s affiliate Bali Energy Ltd. has contracted to build, own, and operate a geothermal power plant on Bali, Republic of Indonesia. The Bali project is a "build-own-operate-transfer" project with P.T. Pandanwangi Sekartaji. A series of plants will be built, with an initial output of 220 Mw and the ability to increase output to 400 Mw. The project is the seventh Asia contract by California Edison and its affiliates in the last two years.
Mission Energy Co., a subsidiary of SCEcorp, has acquired 10 percent of the stock of P.T. Adaro Indonesia. P.T. Adaro Indonesia owns and operates mines and supplies coal. Reserve areas are estimated to contain more than one billion tons of ENVIRONCOALÔ, which emits low levels of ash and sulphur when burned. t
