SCEcorp has a new corporate structure and name: Edison International. It also has a new subsidiary, Edison Source, which specializes in solutions for energy efficiency, the environment, and energy marketing. Edison International now has five subsidiaries; its flagship, Southern California Edison, is the nation's second-largest IOU.
A research team led by the CBA Energy Institute plans a study of North American natural gas and electricity integration to examine both regulatory coordination between the United States, Canada, and Mexico and the barriers to seamless border transactions. The Institute, part of the University of Houston's College of Business Administration, will fund the study with a Shell Oil Co. Foundation grant.
For the first time, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) will supply steam from one of its fossil-fuel plants to meet a customer's need. Under a long-term contract, TVA will provide steam to a DuPont plant that produces titanium dioxide, a pigment used in paints and plastics. Testing of the new service is still underway.
Wisconsin Public Service Corp. has agreed to build a 4-Mw generating plant for the Oneida Nation. The $1-million plant, expected to begin operating in June, will run on low-sulfur diesel fuel.
Three information service companies have signed contracts with utilities:
s RAM Mobile Data will help with wireless dispatch and customer service operations at Illinois Power.
s Itron has signed an agreement worth more than $150 million with Duquesne Light Co. to provide automatic meter reading, outage detection, and similar services. Itron also has received an order from Western Resources, Inc. for a system that will automatically read 32,000 electric meters in Lawrence, KS.
s AT&T will join with Con Edison to develop energy services products for commercial customers, to include real-time pricing and load management. t
