Entergy Corp. signed a letter of intent to acquire National Security Service, a security monitoring company that operates in North Carolina and Alabama. Entergy claims the acquisition places it among the top alarm companies in the country.
K Energy, Inc. has begun "Simple ChoiceSM" (em energy, communications, and "infotainment" services in one package, paid with one bill. To bring these services to its rural customers, K Services has aligned with DISH NetworkÔ, a satellite entertainment company; Metricom's RicochetÔ wireless modem and Internet service; Frontier HomeSaver Long Distance service; MaxServ, which provides home-products repair; and DQE WeatherWiseÔ, which "weatherproofs" customers' natural gas bills.
The Manufacturing Alliance of Connecticut (MAC) selected Yankee Energy Services Co. (YESCo) to manage members' energy needs. More than 50 MAC members show interest in the project, along with other large-volume users of natural gas. YESCo's parent is Yankee Energy System, Inc.
Northern States Power Co. has filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to increase the licensed power level of the Monticello Nuclear Generating plant. The request supports a power re-rate program designed to reduce customers' energy costs by boosting the plant's output from 1,670 to 1,775 Mw thermal. NSP has also contracted with CellNet Data Systems, Inc. to provide network meter-reading services to more than 1 million homes and businesses in the Minneapolis/ St. Paul region.
A $3-million Illinois Coal Development Board grant will fund 33 research projects to investigate improvements in coal efficiency processing, alternative means of coal preparation, and how to manage and use coal combustion residues. Projects will be completed by August 31, 1997.
A $250,000 grant from the American Water Works Association Research Foundation will fund research for guidelines on water-quality problems in water-distribution systems. The project team includes: Consumers Water Co., Black and Veatch, American Water Works Service Co., South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority, and others. Twenty-one U.S., Canadian, and British water utilities also will contribute to the project.
Chase Manhattan Bank's Global Power & Environmental Group will finance a gas and electric project in Peru. Chase has been an adviser to Maple Gas Corp. since it was awarded the $250-million Aguaytia Project by the Peruvian government in 1993. Chase helped raise $150 million in equity funding and about $100 million in limited recourse debt. The equity participants include, among others, Illinova Generating Co., a subsidiary of Illinova Corp., and Power Markets Development Co., a subsidiary of Pennsylvania Power & Light Co.
