We interviewed nine of the leaders at Hawaiian Electric including Colton Ching, SVP for planning and technology at Hawaiian Electric.

PUF: What is your role and what does it entail?

Colton Ching: My title is Senior Vice President of Planning and Technology for the Hawaiian Electric companies. That means my team is responsible for planning out the entire electric system for all five islands that we serve.

That includes everything from planning out the generation system, the transmission system, the distribution system and the integration of all of the renewables that we have and plan to add in the future, whether they're large grid-scale systems, small distributed private rooftop systems, electric vehicle integration, distributed storage, the whole gamut.

The planners plan both short term and long term. One of the big responsibilities for my area is to figure out how the companies will meet our one hundred percent renewable energy goal. It's important things like that.
