The Edison Electric Institute in June held EEI 2023 in Austin, Texas, and brought together industry and government leaders, regulators, stakeholders, and innovators to highlight actions and leadership of America's electric companies to deliver resilient clean energy across the economy. One of those innovators at the conference was VEIR, a company aimed at bringing new transmission technology to utilities.

VEIR is born out of the decarbonization revolution sweeping the globe, and its CEO Timothy Heidel, is determined there will be enough new transmission to allow an electrified future. The technology is new, but necessary, according to this innovator.

Public Utilities Fortnightly's Steve Mitnick met up with Heidel at EEI 2023 and found out about using evaporative cooling of liquid nitrogen to cool cables of high-temperature superconducting material as a method to increase transmission capacity. Read on to learn more about this fascinating innovation.
