PUF: What's exciting about Viking Cold?
James Bell: It's a unique technology, and a unique capability, in thermal energy storage. The origins of thermal energy storage came from NASA research quite a few years ago, with the space program. We've taken that technology and expanded it to try and help better preserve food and save large quantities of energy.
We have a view on sustainability, and a view on reduced carbon future, that this technology is uniquely positioned to satisfy. The system optimizes refrigeration equipment by storing thermal energy inside of primarily low temperature freezers. We allow the operator to save money because of the efficiency and to better protect their products.
They also get to decide when and how they participate in the electrical market by coming on and off the grid. They can avoid demand charges and peak charges. They also generally have better control of their overall energy spend.
