2020? What can you say? It was surely a tumultuous year. Covid. Recession. Race. NARUC was determined to make some sense of each of their impacts on utility regulation and their collective impact as well. A step in doing so was the one-day conference NARUC hosted in December, with nearly a thousand of us looking in on the proceedings. What followed was a series of riveting discussions on race and racism in a trying year of health and economic challenges. Here we excerpt a few of exceptionally eloquent words spoken that day.
 

Sadzi Oliva, Commissioner, Illinois Commerce Commission: Immediately following the death of George Floyd on May 25, then-NARUC president, Brandon Presley, called me and Missouri Commissioner Maida Coleman, asking what can we do about racial inequity and injustice here at NARUC? Commissioner Coleman and I got to work right away planning today's events. We wanted today to make an impact on you in making the best decisions related to Covid, the recession and race.
