Sometime in early 2015, I turned my attention back to the power markets, several years removed from my past experiences developing trading models for Enron in the late 1990s. The Independent System Operators had come a long way in the development of their technology and datasets. 

In addition, the technology for aggregating and display of visual GIS data had significantly improved, making greater visualization and use of electric grid data possible. Working with a small development team out of Pittsburgh, we set about forming the predecessor to Clarity Grid Solutions (Clarity Risk Management) and began the data aggregation and coding effort. 

Convinced that the visualization of the grid in the form of substations and generators could lead to powerful insights, we set about mapping the portions of the U.S. covered by the seven U.S. ISOs. We felt that the audience could be broader than the traditional power trading customer set, so we intentionally set out to aggregate all data from public, but using hard to find sources, abstaining from NDA or CEII data. We soon realized what a tremendous undertaking this was, ultimately resulting in what is today a database of over seventy thousand unique pricing points.
