In late April, an ad hoc coalition of diversified gas and electric utilities from across the country asked FERC to issue a Notice of Inquiry seeking input from industry stakeholders to examine added measures the Commission could take to preserve and further incentivize reliable deliveries of natural gas via the interstate pipeline network. The coalition is united by the common goal of maintaining reliable deliveries of natural gas on the interstate pipeline network.

The coalition suggested potential actions for FERC to consider in support of the preservation and enhancement of interstate pipeline service reliability, such as requiring interstate pipelines to submit annual reports on reliability metrics. It asked for more conversations to bolster gas-electric coordination and pointed to cross-sector efforts, such as the NARUC Task Force on Gas-Electric Alignment for Reliability, or GEAR, as an example.

The Utility Coalition consists of Boston Gas Co., the Brooklyn Union Gas Co., Consolidated Edison Company of New York, KeySpan Gas East Corp., Niagara Mohawk Power, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, Orange & Rockland Utilities, and Washington Gas Light Company. PUF talked with four executives on the importance of this endeavor; Con Ed VP Chris Raup, National Grid SVP Mike Calviou, Washington Gas VP Jessica Rogers, and Old Dominion Electric Co-op VP Bill Pezalla.
