The Open Power AI Consortium
Jeremy Renshaw is EPRI Executive Director of AI and Quantum Technology.
A ChatGPT specifically targeted for the power sector. Sounds interesting, right? EPRI recently launched its Open Power AI Consortium to evolve the electric sector by leveraging advanced AI technologies to transform the way electricity is produced, delivered, and used.

The consortium brings together utilities, national labs, academic institutions, startups, and technology providers to understand large language model performance in the power sector. We’re proud to already have more than eighty members, including NVIDIA, Microsoft, AWS, and a slew of utilities.
Utilities are looking at how they can provide more affordable, reliable, and resilient energy systems. AI can help with all of these goals.
The consortium will focus on three primary objectives, including developing open-source AI and GenAI tools (models, datasets, and libraries), developing an AI sandbox for model evaluation, and accelerating deployment in the power industry. These objectives, optimized for the sector, will foster collaboration, reduce duplication of effort, enhance access to high-quality tools and information, and accelerate innovation.
