Limited generation profiles (LGPs) and limited load profiles (LLPs) are emerging approaches that can enable the integration of more generation or load on the distribution grid without the need for costly and time-consuming upgrades or study processes. As regulators and utilities grapple with unprecedented load growth as well as clean energy and climate goals, LGPs and LLPs can offer a cost-effective and rapid solution.

Vaughan Woodruff, Regulatory Vice President at the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), spoke with Sky Stanfield, an attorney who has been deeply involved in the first state implementation of these regulatory tools, to learn more. Stanfield represents IREC in state regulatory proceedings and is a partner at Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger, LLP.

IREC’s Vaughan Woodruff: What are limited generation profiles?

Sky Stanfield: Limited generation profiles, or LGPs, allow interconnection applicants to propose a defined export schedule for their project that would limit export during periods when the grid is constrained.

By doing this, a distributed energy resource (DER) project, like a solar array or an energy storage system, can avoid distribution system impacts and the need for grid upgrades. In most cases, they can also interconnect quickly using a fast-track screening process and avoid lengthy study processes usually required for projects that exceed current system constraints.
