If you’re heading to Seattle for the NARUC Annual Meeting, get ready to experience a city and state where clean energy isn’t just a policy goal; it’s a way of life. From its hydropower heritage to its forward-leaning policy reforms, Seattle retains the title as home to the first electric utility in the country to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality, maintaining that status every year since 2005; while Washington State is charting one of the most ambitious and coordinated clean energy transitions in the country.

Tucked between the Puget Sound and the snowcapped Cascade Range, Seattle is a city built on reinvention. Founded in 1851 and named for the Native American Chief Sealth of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes, it rose from the ashes of the Great Seattle Fire of 1889 to become a major Pacific port and a launch point for the Klondike Gold Rush. The Space Needle captured the nation’s imagination during the 1960’s Space Age, and the first Starbucks opened its doors in Pike Place Market in 1971, fueling another kind of cultural, caffeinated movement.
