The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) supports regulators through its Freeing the Grid initiative, which grades states’ interconnection regulations, and its Model Interconnection Procedures that compile ready-to-use model language to align interconnection rules with the current best practices from across the country.

IREC’s engineers, attorneys, and policy professionals also serve as public interest intervenors to support commissions as they adopt and adapt rules governing distributed energy resource interconnection and the energization of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Vaughan Woodruff manages the Regulatory Program at IREC, a nonprofit that helps states and territories regulate electric utilities to ensure DERs, such as solar, energy storage, and electric vehicles can rapidly and equitably decarbonize the grid.

This conversation with Vaughan Woodruff explores the history of the Model Interconnection Procedures, including how they build upon historic work from NARUC.
