At the Tuesday General Session of the NARUC Annual Meeting and Education Conference, a Fireside Chat on Data Centers was held, due to the interest surrounding the addition of these large loads in utility service territories. The Fireside Chat was moderated by NARUC President and Georgia Commissioner Tricia Pridemore, with Southern Company COO Stan Connally and Amazon Web Services Senior Manager Craig Sundstrom. Enjoy these excerpts.

Commissioner Tricia Pridemore: I find this an awesome challenge for our country and industry and both of you have been at the heart of it for a few years. Where do you think we are? Are we still in the beginning? Are we in the middle or do we move on to something else in the next couple of months?

Craig Sundstrom: Companies like Amazon and our industry peers have been at the table with regulators, utility partners, and other stakeholders trying to help answer the question, who’s going to pay for the infrastructure? This is the central question.

We now have Commission proceedings in a number of states where we have come to terms on answering the question of what that looks like going forward. We are eager to be a partner in this conversation as it plays out in jurisdictions across the U.S.
