Around the world, data centers are reshaping electricity demand in ways few anticipated even a decade ago. From Ireland to Singapore to Brazil, governments and grid operators are confronting a common challenge: how to accommodate large, fast-moving loads without compromising reliability or affordability. As most are aware, that same dynamic is also playing out across the United States, at a scale that is both urgent and unprecedented.

For the first time in decades, U.S. electricity demand is growing meaningfully. Data centers, artificial intelligence workloads, and the electrification of transportation and buildings are all accelerating at once. This growth is a positive signal for the economy, but unmanaged, it presents a real financial risk for bill-paying electricity customers. Every utility leader, regulator, and consumer advocate that I speak with is working to balance this equation.
