September 11-13
Veterans in Energy met this year in Washington, D.C. to accommodate growing numbers. The fourth annual was over two hundred strong and looks to keep getting bigger. While president Jon Smith announced achieving the milestone of nonprofit, 501(c)(3) status, speakers throughout the conference amazed us with percentages of veterans in the industry.
Georgia Power's Cassandra Wheeler, also vice president of Vets in Energy, let us know that veterans make up some eleven percent of those working in our business. Maria Korsnick, CEO of Nuclear Energy Institute, told us veterans comprise twenty-four percent of those in the nuclear industry. And Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said about thirty-six percent of staff at Department of Energy are veterans. Makes sense, as veterans are a great fit for energy companies with a positive work ethic, sense of duty, discipline, and can-do attitude.
