New Opportunities: PPL Corp. selected William H. Spence, currently the company’s executive v.p. and COO, as president. Spence replaces James H. Miller, PPL’s president since 2005. Miller will continue to serve as chairman and chief executive officer.

Pacific Gas & Electric hired Anthony Earley Jr. as its new CEO. Earley was chairman of DTE Energy. He succeeds Peter Darbee, who resigned in April.

Southern Company selected Kenneth E. Coleman as senior v.p. and CIO, succeeding Becky Blalock. Previously, Coleman was v.p. of Alabama Power’s southern division.

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) named Roy Brosi director of strategic industry initiatives. Brosi most recently served as director of performance improvement at FENOC’s Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station.

FirstEnergy Solutions named new sales and marketing executives: Julie Hextell will become senior v.p. of sales and marketing, succeeding Arthur Yuan, who plans to retire in 2013. In addition, David Hennekes was named v.p. of marketing. Hextell was COO of SoCore Energy, and Hennekes was v.p. and general manager for the residential division at TXU Energy.
