Learning from Sandy

Improving storm damage assessments at electric utilities.

Utilizing new technologies, utilities can realize dramatic improvements to damage assessment and storm restoration processes.

Alstom to Build and Upgrade Eleven Electrical Substations in Germany

Alstom Grid was awarded eleven turnkey projects worth over $50 million by Netze BW to modernize their electrical network in Germany. The projects include the construction and upgrade of four gas-insulated substations (GIS) in Stuttgart city center and seven turnkey air-insulated substations (AIS) in rural areas, scheduled for completion by 2017. Alstom will supply the necessary electrical equipment to build and extend the gas-insulated and air-insulated substations. The turnkey projects include the related civil works.

ABB to Provide Substation Solution in Southern India to Help Meet Growing Power Demand

ABB won an order worth around $10 million from Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO), the state-owned utility, to build a new substation in downtown Chennai, India. As part of the turnkey contract, ABB will design, supply, install and commission the substation. Key product supplies include nine bays of 230 kV GIS, power transformers and 23 indoor switchgear units rated at 33 kV. The substations will also be equipped with IEC 61850 based open protection, automation and telecommunication systems as well as ancilliary systems.

ABB Wins Power Products Order worth Over $30 Million from PSE&G

ABB won an order worth over $30 million from Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) to supply gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) for substations to boost the reliability of transmission infrastructure in New Jersey. ABB’s order includes design, supply and commissioning of ABB’s 550 kV GIS type ELK-3, a compact and modular solution. PSE&G is spending $4 billion between 2014 and 2016 to upgrade its electricity infrastructure to meet demand for electricity.

Threat Level Red

Integrating weather and GIS data for more accurate threat assessments.

Weather and GIS are being combined in new ways to provide better storm threat assessments - helping utilities create increasingly effective battle plans to defend against approaching storms.

Toward a 21st Century Grid

Producing value with advanced distribution management systems.

Changing demands from regulators, customers, and shareholders are driving utilities toward better operational technologies to manage an increasingly complex grid. Advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) promise nearly real-time operational insight for maintaining reliability, safety, and security.

Modernization Foundation

Near-term vision for advanced distribution management.

Recent superstorms and other major events have raised the bar for utility reliability and grid planning. By bringing together various advanced systems in an integrated distribution management platform, utilities can make power systems more resilient – and provide better service for customers.

Modeling Storm Outages

New tools for enhancing utility preparedness and response.

Sandy and other major storms have raised the bar for outage management. New modeling systems help utilities predict effects and plan their response.

ABB Wins GIS substation Order for PPL’s Sunbury Project

ABB provided a 500kV turnkey gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation to upgrade the existing PPL Electric Utilities’ Sunbury Substation located north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. ABB is providing all engineering, equipment and construction for the project, including the GIS switchgear, its associated foundation and enclosure and the GIS bus work that will be extending from the enclosure to the existing transformer and 500kV lines.
